RMS to EMT network reduction & validation

EMT studies cannot practically include an entire transmission network, so the wider system is reduced to an equivalent that preserves the behaviour that matters at the study boundary. Network reduction turns a large RMS model into an EMT-ready equivalent without losing the dynamics the study depends on.

When this study is needed.

  • A detailed EMT study needs a tractable model of an otherwise very large network.
  • An RMS model (PowerFactory, PSS®E) must be converted into an EMT environment.
  • The study boundary and equivalent must be justified to a reviewing operator.
  • Several EMT studies will reuse a consistent, validated reduced network.

How we approach it.

  1. Define the study area to retain in detail and the boundary where reduction begins.
  2. Pre-condition the source RMS model and extract the data needed for the equivalent.
  3. Form the network equivalent (e.g. Ward-type) preserving short-circuit and frequency behaviour at the boundary.
  4. Validate the reduced model against the full model for the responses the study cares about.
  5. Document the boundary choice, the equivalent and its validation as study evidence.

EMT is computationally heavy; a full transmission model would be impractical to run and maintain. Reduction keeps the study area detailed while representing the rest by an equivalent that preserves the relevant behaviour.

By validating it against the full model for the responses that matter at the boundary — short-circuit behaviour and the frequency range of interest — and by documenting where the equivalent is and isn't valid.
